A number of customers have been receiving the following prompt when attempting to log into Smart Service. In most cases, QuickBooks is open and running in the background. This is due to an issue where QuickBooks reports that no company file is open when Smart Service requests the connection to your company file.

Intuit is aware of the issue and working to resolve it. In the meantime, we have listed some of the common fixes for this issue and the details we have on why it occurs. Please follow the steps below if you encounter this message!

Restart QuickBooks and Smart Service

It’s the easiest fix on the list! Try closing both programs and opening them again. Especially if your computer has gone to sleep while QuickBooks is running. If you log back into both programs and continue to see the message, please move on to the steps below.

Run QuickBooks Updates

The most common step to resolve the above message is to run your QuickBooks updates. The Intuit Community has a video for this available here as well as directions and links to the latest releases.

In most cases, updating your QuickBooks Desktop application is an important step in not only receiving the latest features but also commonly resolving the “QuickBooks is not Running” error. You may wish to reboot your computer after running your QuickBooks Updates.

Repair QBFC

QBFC is the program QuickBooks provides us to integrate with their program. Sometimes this linkage breaks down and requires a quick repair. If you haven’t run a repair on a program before, no worries! You can type “Add or Remove Programs” in your start menu as shown in the image below.

This is a quick and easy process, but the directions on how to use this Windows feature are available here. You can type “QBFC” into the search bar on the Add or Remove Programs window and click on QBFC 12.0 to get to the modify button, where you can make the repair.

You can click on the image above to make it full screen and follow along.
